  • Available in 2 x 2.5 litres.
  • Expiry - 5 years
  • 8x Concentrate of 10% Neutral Buffered Formalin.
  • Unique formulation process and treatment produces a solution/concentrate that will not form Paraformaldehyde even under prolonged storage conditions at 4 degrees C, the feature is also carried over into the Diluted State.
  • Buffering system is by Sorensen salts, which have the largest buffering capacity of conventional systems and is tailored to produce a pH of 7.0 when correctly diluted, unlike the traditional formulations as listed in Carleton, Lillie and Bancroft and Stevens which have a pH of 6.8 - 6.9.
  • Note:- 10% Formalin is equivalent to 4% Formaldehyde which is the correct Terminology usage according to the Dangerous Goods Act. ACTDG. SUSDP and Worksafe Australia.
  • The Neutral Concentrate is offered either as a Clear solution, or with Indicator (Choice of Bromocresyl Purple or Bromothymol Blue) or with Edicol Blue Dye, being described as "Clear Purple, Green and Blue" resp. Phenol Red is also available.
  • The use of Indicators in 10% solutions was introduced by Dr. H.K.I. McLachlan FRCPA, M. Rentsch in 1981 ref. AMA.J.MED.1981 Letters to Ed. in response to a Coronial recommendation that some form of colour coding should be introduced into Hospitals to visually identify the solutions in the workplace. It is appreciated that different Institutions have different colour coded systems and this is catered for with the options offered: Indicators have the added advantage of alerting operators within the Laboratory of early pH changes before Formaldehyde pigment is formed (Colour changes at about 6.7 -6.8 well before pH 5.7 when the pigment is formed). When the buffering capacity is exceeded, this is particularly so for bloody specimens, placenta thyroid etc. This is also of assistance for long term storage wet of specimens where the change in conditions can be seen visually, allowing the operator the opportunity to change the fixative.
  • The concentrate is ideal for use in its neat state for Brain especially whole specimens, adding only enough water to solution so that the sample sinks (if not already).
  • The presence of Indicators and Edical Blue Dye have no reported adverse effects on Antigens demonstrated by Peroxidase techniques over a period of some 18 years in use by Gippsland Pathology Service (Both Public and Privatised) and at least 10 years by all major hospitals and private laboratories within Victoria. Five years by Queensland Medical Service and three years by Westmead Health Services NSW. There may be some retentive colouration by cartilagenous tissues noted at the time of prosection, but no effect is exhibited upon stained section material.
  • QA assessment is by Formaldehyde assay on all batches and by pH determination on the diluted working solution. Batches are also assayed by A.P.S. Anlytical Testing Laboratory, an Independant Testing Laboratory and NATA Registered and approved for such assays.
